About the WASH initiatives

The government of the Netherlands supports public-private partnerships (PPPs) under the sustainable water fund (FDW) in the field of water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH), water efficiency and integrated water management worldwide. The FDW program is administered by RVO.nl and implemented by public, private, NGOs and knowledge institutions partners. Through FDW, RVO.nl executes 33 projects in 22 countries and in 13 sectors.

RVO initiated a ‘sensemaking’ pilot to learn how to use stories to deepen their understanding of the impact of their WASH projects. With the help of Sprockler - a story based research method - we collected experiences and data of two projects, in Kenya and in Ghana. Different stakeholders (from NGO staff to direct beneficiaries) in each of the countries were asked to share one experience that illustrates a significant change that occurred related to the WASH service or solution. Questions then followed to make sense of the story and to better understand the kind of (positive/negative) impact the project has so far. This report presents all the stories and data collected in Kenya and Ghana.

GHANAIAN PROJECT: the project in Ghana has implemented mobile monitoring systems to monitor rural water and sanitation services with the aim to contribute to reducing the high level of the breakdowns of drinking water systems. The project introduced a mobile monitoring system and a response system , whereby the government can effectively budget and plan investments.

KENYAN PROJECT: in the district of Kilifi on the Kenyan coast, a sanitation market has been created through social marketing (demand creation), sanitation entrepreneur strengthening and providing loans for toilets for households, schools and other institutions.

We have learned the link between using bushes to relieve oneself and diarrhoeal diseases. Before they were common and now that we are using toilets it has reduced.

About the services

With involvement of youth in sanitation businesses, social issues, such as insecurity, drug and substance abuse and teenage pregnancies have drastically reduced. In addition, by saving the extra income from the sanitation businesses the youths have been able to substantially attain financial stability as a prerequisite to sustainable economic growth.
